Building Links for SEO

As a blogger, there are few things building links more frustrating than writing a great post and having no one read it. You can drive thousands of visitors to your site using paid ads, but those visitors won’t stick around unless they’re interested in what you have to say. One of the best ways to get people interested in your content is by earning links from other sites — also known as backlinks. Links from other websites send referral traffic directly to your website and improve its ranking on search engines like Google and Bing. If you do it right, getting quality links can be easier than you think!

Do your research.

Before you start writing a link building, do your research.

  • Know your audience. What are they looking for? What kind of content do they like to consume and share? Do they prefer short, snappy articles or long-form content that goes into detail on a topic?
  • Research similar sites and content. Look at what competing sites are doing with their links–what kinds of anchor text they use and how often they use it (if at all). You can also take note of what type of content is being linked to on those pages: if it’s an image gallery or blog post, then chances are good that images may be important in getting people interested enough in the site being linked to visit it as well…but if it’s just another news article or press release without any images whatsoever attached, then maybe there’s no need for us here either!

Be strategic about anchor text.

The words you use to describe your links are called anchor text. Anchor text is the clickable text in a hyperlink, and it tells Google what the page you’re linking to is about.

Anchor text should include keywords relevant to your website and content, but not too many (or else you’ll look spammy). You want your anchor texts to be natural and readable for humans as well as search engines–so don’t go overboard with long-tail keyword phrases like “buy cheap shoes online” or “the best place buy shoes online.” Instead, try using shorter versions of those phrases: “shoes,” “cheap,” “best,” etc., plus brand names (if applicable).

Be helpful, not spammy.

As a general rule, it’s always better to be helpful than spammy.

  • Don’t link to your competitors. If you’re linking out to other sites, make sure they have something of value that helps your readers and doesn’t just drive traffic back toward one of your competitors.
  • Avoid link farms and automated link building tools. These are two types of sites that exist solely for the purpose of generating links; they don’t offer any real value on their own and will hurt more than help if used as sources in an SEO campaign (or any other type).
  • Don’t use private blog networks (PBNs). PBNs are networks built by companies who sell access to their members’ content as part of an affiliate program–for example, if someone clicks through from one site within a network onto another site within that same network and buys something from them in return for being linked there first rather than having gone through Google or Bing directly

You can also use these tools to find good links that are relevant to your business. For example, if you sell dog toys online, then it wouldn’t make sense for your website’s homepage link profile (the pages on which other sites have linked) to include links from websites about cats or horses–or even toys in general!

  • You don’t need thousands of links to rank well. In fact, the quality of your links is more important than the quantity. So don’t be spammy and try to get links from places that are not relevant to your site.
  • There are many tools that can help you identify what kind of links to target: Ahrefs, Moz Open Site Explorer (OSE), BuzzSumo etc… These tools will help you find out which sites have linked back to similar websites in the past so you know where they might link again if approached by yours. Every link has value so don’t spam your site with irrelevant ones either!

This may sound obvious, but it’s a lot harder than it sounds. You need to give credit where credit is due, provide useful information or resources in your posts and comments on other sites (not just your own), and make sure that the content you create is unique enough that people will want to link back at all–let alone share it with their followers on social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter.

If you follow the tips above, you should be able to build links that will help your SEO efforts. Remember that getting links isn’t just about quantity–it’s also about quality.
